Rumor: Super Slim PS3 for TGS reveal

The Tokyo Game Show will play host to the formal reveal of Sony’s long-rumored Super Slim PlayStation 3.

That’s at least according to the newsletter for Polish retailer Media Expert, which features an image pointing to a new PS3 hardware revision. Furthermore, the date posted on the ad – September 28 – just happens to be a couple of days after Sony’s TGS presser.

Speculation on a new PS3 model has been doing the rounds for a good few months now. Earlier this summer, it was suggested Sony was readying the new hardware for a Gamescom reveal. That didn’t happen, but chatter has been on-going since.

According to reports, the Super Slim PS3 will ship in two models: 120GB (€199) and 500GB (€299).

Mortal Kombat needs to innovate for next game, say Ed Boon

Mortal Kombat big cheese Ed Boon has revealed that the next entry in the venerable beat-‘em-up series must bring plenty of new ideas to the table.

Speaking with CVG, Boon, co-creator of the series alongside John Tobias, suggested that simply adding new characters to the roster of the next game won’t be enough, and that innovation is more crucial.

“Just philosophically, I don't think we could take the approach of doing the same thing but adding new characters in our next Mortal Kombat game," he said.

"We definitely want to do something new with it, we feel we have to introduce something into the mix."

Developer NetherRealm is currently working on a new title by the name of Injustice: Gods Among Us, with development of a new Mortal Kombat title yet to begin.

However, Boon went on to indicate that the next game will appear on next-generation consoles, believing releasing a sequel on current systems would forgo the chance to offer fresh ideas.

"If you introduce another edition of your game on the same console, you cannot provide a radically different experience," explained Boon.

"I'm sure, if we were to do a new Mortal Kombat game on next generation systems, I think we would be able to provide dramatically different experiences."

Above all however, Boon wants to avoid simply rehashing the same ideas with each iteration, noting that doing so will impede upon sales over time.

"I'm a big fan of fighting games, but some of them I've seen are just a re-skin of the same game with much prettier graphics and new characters," added Boon.

"Effectively it just delivers the same experience, and over the course of time these games sell less and less and less and less. I think you need to offer something that hasn't been done before. Like with Injustice, no one has done what we're doing with the game's backgrounds, and I think that's a big part of why it will appeal to fans."

Injustice: Gods Among Us is due out in 2013.

Pro Evolution Soccer 2013 release date announced

Pro Evolution Soccer 2013 will be released on September 21 for PlayStation 3, PC and Xbox 360, Konami Digital Entertainment has confirmed.

Dates for the PlayStation 2, PlayStation Portable, 3DS and Wii versions have yet to be confirmed, but will be revealed shortly.

This latest entry in the long-running footie franchises is billed as a massive overhaul for the series, introducing the ‘PES Full Control’ feature, giving players unprecedented control over the ball for the first time.

In addition, the AI has also been upgraded, with Pro Active AI giving team members realistic movement on the pitch, reacting as they would in real life.

Elsewhere, Konami also revealed details on a pre-order incentive for PES 2013, which comes in the shape of the limited UEFA Champions League steelbook edition. The bundle includes special code allowing gamers to redeem the Historic UEFA Champions League Match Balls used in the competition.

Meanwhile, U.K. gamers who pre-order the game will be able to bag the Manchester United-themed steelbook edition, which features the legendary club’s livery on the cover.
